Most people don’t consider the environment when pulling that old lawn mower out of the shed and performing weekly lawn mowing. While you may only be using this mower for maybe an hour or two at the most, there are some things you should realize about that fuel chugging engine you’re using. These things might change your mind on how you maintain your yard.
First, you should realize that, for the most part, no lawn mower engines have been tested for emissions like most cars. Because of this, the manufacturers have been able to just make engines without trying to cut down the emissions from them.
The good thing is that more and more people are becoming aware of the need to clean up the pollution caused by fossil fuel engines. Because of this, there are more and more mowers coming out with emission standards put into the manufacturing of their engines. But these mowers are only one or two years old. Older mowers still have no emission standards.
How to maintain your lawn to save it from pollutants?
There are some conservative reports that say a regular gas-powered lawn mower engine can produce as much pollution as 40 late model cars. While this may seem a little farfetched, you have to look at the pollutants that are coming out of the engine.
Things like ozone, carbon monoxide and dioxide, and even polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are being spewed out of the exhaust of the mower that you’re using every week. Don’t forget about the gas and oil that you’ve spilled while refueling or routine maintenance, either.
Electric Start Self Propelled Lawn Mower
One way to get around all of this is by using an electric mower. This is a great idea if you happen to have an electric company that’s registered as being an accredited Green Energy provider. Otherwise, it looks like you’ll be using the old style push mower without an engine.
These are actually really good if the grass is short, but if it’s too long, it usually wraps around the axle and you spend more time removing the long grass than mowing it down. You can use the push mower for the short stuff and the electric mower for the longer patches and be environmentally friendly with your lawn maintenance.
